The mom stays in the picture

I love the wisdom of Allison's words when she wrote a piece for the Huffington Post urging mothers to stay in their children's pictures.  I AM so guilty of the opposite.  Having taken hundreds of pictures of my daughter with my camera and cellphone, I went looking for a decent picture of us among them after reading her article, and it made me sad to realize I was only visible in less than 10.  This is a dismay.  I'm correcting this right away.  I want my children to see me in pictures.  To see their mom, young, vibrant, tired, overwhelmed but perfectly part of their lives.  I went browsing through my childhood albums, and my own mother was absent in many of them.  She was the picture taker, yet she could have easily handed someone else the camera.  So I went and dug the only pictures I have with my baby daughter to show you here.  I'm not perfect, in fact, I don't like how I look in them, but they are the ONLY pictures she'll see of me at this age.

Weekend outings with a friend

A couple of weeks ago, my good old friend, who lives in NYC stayed with us for the weekend.  We had so much to talk and gossip about.  It was restorative to have her around, because my days can be tiring and sometimes, overwhelmed with routine stuff.  I took her to the farmer's market, Eastern market and flea, and to long walks around our neighborhood.  It was pretty low key, but we both needed this relaxation.  Here are a few pictures of that weekend.

I love our green market.  The produce is always fresh and tasty, seasonal and local.  This past weekend we bought some amazing plums, peaches as always, or until they run out, nectarines, and the usual:  fresh, real cage-free eggs and some artisan bread.   Thanks for visiting, dear old friend.

Farmer's market

We went to the green market last Sunday and brought home some yummy apples, fresh, cage-free brown eggs, some stem flowers, a small Jade plant and the first outside shots taken with my first D-SLR camera.  Have you heard of farm shares?  It's basically a community supported agriculture.  By becoming a member of a farm share, you receive a portion of the farm's season harvest for a fixed price.  It comes in a box delivered to you weekly and it contains seasonal, organic, and fresh items from the farm you pick.  I have been researching this idea, but it turns out that right now we cannot afford to participate in one, so we make weekly trips to Dupont market for a taste of organic and fresh produce.  I'd love to hear more about it, if you or someone you know participates in a farm share.

Have a splashy weekend

Hi friends, the weekend is here!  I'm crazy happy it's finally Friday.  Do you have special plans, now that the weather is turning warm?  It will be in the 60s throughout the weekend in DC, and those are really good news. Gone are the days when my husband and I could easily do date nights or just meet up with friends.  Nowadays we stay in, put the baby to bed, and have a dinner and movie in the coziness of our living room.  Tonight we will be watching Ides of March with George Clooney and Ryan Gosling.  I love political thrillers, as a former political blogger, it's deep in my system. We have been on a Gosling movie streak lately, and this movie comes highly recommended.   Other good news I want to share with you is my most recent splurge and purchase, the Nikon SLR d3100. I got a good deal from Amazon and I will be trying it out this weekend. So excited!  I hope you all have a wonderful, splashy, sunny, relaxing weekend, and if you feel like we browsing, check out these links.

The Importance of Being Silly

Sometimes taking silly pictures can be fun. These pictures were taken in the car seat, which she hates.  They remind me of shots you take at those fair booths, well, now they have them at the mall. I guess that was the idea.  I own a very "non-photographic" camera, a Canon Power Shot with bad lens and only 6.0 pixels (gasp!) capacity.  I know, pretty outdated for today's blogosphere.  I'm hoping to buy a decent camera soon.

Happy Baby =Happy Mom

Emilu wakes up with a flowery face every morning.  She's all made up with smiles, as if she knows that this tickles my heart.  It just melts me in all the right places when she does that.  She's also started to giggle.  I love that sound.  The first time it came out of nowhere.  Now she's doing it more often.  But the amazing cool thing is how much she loves to stare at her image in the mirror.  She gyrates with pleasure and cracks me up every time.

Unfortunately by the time the flash kicked in, she had stopped laughing.  Like a game of " Statue". She could be cracking up in her crib and as soon as I bust out the camera, she stops.  Can you see a pattern here?  She's learning so fast.
