Keep calm and enjoy the weekend!

(via)

Hello, friends, I hope your week was productive and sane.  I'm so glad this week is finally over.   We have decided to plan a baptism for our daughter in Miami, and there's so much to plan and do.  So, I will be busy with that.  We are shooting for Dec. 23.  Sometimes things get overwhelming in your life.  Work, duties, friendships, family, etc.  This quote is perfect to help me find balance.  I also loved the links below, I hope you like them too.  So keep calm and have a cozy weekend!

Halloween block party

This weekend was our neighborhood children's Halloween parade. We saw so many cute diverse costumes. Emilu went as an owl! The parade started out from the neighborhood playground and stopped at local bank, where the kids were treated with candy, then by Whole Foods, where they picked up fresh apples and other sweets, and the final stop, Logan Circle.  I've never seen so many kids dressed up and playing and running around. It was fun.

Exploring the pumpking patch

Last weekend we went pumpkin patching in the neighborhood of Cathedral Heights here in Washington.  Emilu was beyond excited.  I often wonder what goes through toddlers' heads when they see something for the first time. They point, they touch, they grab, they taste.  A time for exploration and imagination.

Have a lovely Fall weekend

I've been thinking about New York lately, even though we were just there a month or so ago.  It's just that Fall is the most gorgeous time in that city. And the smells and the colors have stayed with me ever since I went for the first time 18 years ago during the Fall.  During this time, we start rolling out the rituals we so much love to do.  I take out my favorite DVD, which I insist on watching only in the Fall.  I cook and bake certain dishes, like cheesecake, creme brulee, casseroles, and tomato basil soup.  I unearth a few blankets and switch up the throw pillows, and basically redecorate with more color and put more scent around the house.  It's part of the transformation and the search for beauty one craves during this time.  I've have also been thinking about the things I want more during this time, hence the snapshot above with affirmations to help me get there.  How about you friends, what are you searching for this Fall? Above, all, enjoy this time of year.

Have a cozy Fall weeked!

Photo via

Happy Friday everyone!  The week flew by for me.  Do you have any special plans?  I'm planning on relaxing and catching up on my reading and blogging.  I have been away from the blogging scene these last few days.  I feel bloggers out there are really energized and the content being published is so good, I can't keep up with everyone I love. But, it does make me think about the direction I want to take my blog.  I feel that sometimes it doesn't translate my deepest intentions.  I have some soul-searching to do, I guess.  I did find some really good links, which have made my week.  Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Have a lovely weekend!

This week went by slowly for me. Maybe because I'm anxious to get on a plane to Miami next week.  So there's cleaning, laundry, some minor shopping and luggage making.  Finally!  I will be in the Sunshine state for 10 sunny days.  Emilu and Piki are coming with me, of course, and I will keep you posted on our everyday stuff.  I hope you have a lovely weekend and click on some cute inspiration down below.

Have a delightful weekend!

The first weekend in Autumn is officially upon us.  Tomorrow is the Autumnal equinox, and the sun's rays will align to close perfection with the Earth's axis.  A moment when the Earth's Southern and Northern hemispheres are receiving the sun's rays equally, and the Earth's tilt isn't inclined too far or too close to the Sun. It's a moment of balance that happens twice a year!   No wonder past cultures relished this, and even worshiped around the equinoxes.  A small wonder in our complicated relationship with the Sun.  Can you tell I'm a sap for these things?  It's the inner esoteric in me that finds this awe inspiring.  Anyway, I will be enjoying this special day whatever I'm doing.  I hope you guys do too. Surround yourself with beauty and inspiration this weekend.  Here are few links I have enjoyed.  Hope you too.

These boots!

Fall is in the air.  Last night we didn't turn on the AC for the first time since Summer began.  In fact, we slept with a window cracked open, just a slit, and it got so chilly, I had to close it in the middle of the night.  Today the apt. is a comfortably 75 degrees and the AC unit is still off.  You know what that means!  It's time for boots, you all!  Actually, booties, to be more precise.  Diana is right!  Fall is too playful to be so covered up, so the perfect pair of shoes for me are booties (or ankle boots).  I'm loving this:

Welcoming Autumn {in my own special way}

Image via

The shorter days are bringing cooler weather. A chill is in the air. What is it about Autumn we love so much?  The bountiful feasts and seasonal food favorites?  Or the changing guard of color and shades of the outdoors giving our spirits a much needed recharge?  We get excited because Fall represents so many renewing energies.  Celebrations are planned around the globe, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and the Festival of Lights, and  we gather with loved ones to share our blessings.  We get crafty around the house, our closets get a makeover, and our kitchens get infused with the aromas of the season.

Autumn officially starts with the equinox, which this year enters around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere.  It's a day of balance, when the day and night are closest in length. At the equinoxes, the sun appears overhead at noon as seen from Earth’s equator, the moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator.  In fact, you might notice the arc of the sun across the sky each day now well into the Winter, because it's shifting toward the south. From now on, Nature begins its yearly withdrawal and rest in preparation for Winter. Birds and butterflies are migrating southward, too, along with the path of the sun. This arc is one of the signposts for wildlife to head to warmer climates.

This year I'm feeling more attuned with the seasons and want to celebrate the beginning of Autumn by aligning myself more with Nature It's how people lived in the past.  I started by bringing a little  Fall into the house. I hung a canvas bag filled with green, red and orange eucalyptus branches in the hallway, infusing a nice fresh piney scent around the house.  I'm planning on celebrating the Moon Goddess (and Goddess of the Harvest) by creating a corn husk doll (more on that later). Also, I'll be eating some pomegranate seeds and sharing them with Emilu in honor of Persephone, the virgin goddess who is abducted by Hades (her husband) to the underworld, leaving her mother Demeter to grieve her absence during Autumn and Winter. But here's a few things we can all do to celebrate the Fall:

  • Give thanks: Look around you now and reflect on the past blessings bestowed on you and your loved ones. If you feel inclined, you can bestow gifts on Mother Nature (the Moon Goddess or Goddess of the Harvest) by pouring some wine on the ground, or feeding the birds seeds, even recycling, if you never do.
  • Seek balance:  Create balance in your life now.  Pay attention to your thoughts and your feelings.  If you are outgoing and love to be among people, seek time alone, to reflect, to plan, to feed your soul.  If you are the opposite, call a friend, or write her a letter.
  • Create and nurture:  Just like Mother Nature, this is a time to withdraw and rest.  But if you look closely you can begin to nurture yourself and those around you.  This time is perfect to create new projects, concentrating and nurturing a seed that will blossom once Spring makes its entrance. We have more or less six months to nurture our projects. See, Nature is already working with us!

Monday reflection

Happy Monday everyone! Let's get ready to accomplish things. Doesn't the change of seasons re-energize you a bit? In most ancient cultures, Autumn was the time to collect the harvest, to gather and the preserve the goods, and to prepare the bountiful feasts of the year. And this is still is the case for most cultures, isn't it? But it's also a time to reflect on the behaviors and attitudes that require our attention, as well as the blessings we are endowed with.  I will officially welcome Autumn later on this week.

Happy weekend!

I love how we are slowly transitioning from Summer to Fall. The evenings are cooler and the mornings more crisp. A little sweater goes a long way right now, doesn't it? We are relaxing this weekend with some friends, how about you? We might check a few new Art & Market venues this weekend. Last weekend, we stopped by the new Union Market in the northeast, and it's looking pretty good.  Although not Chelsea, it's got good bones to become something special. Here are some pictures.

Also we can't wait to attend the official opening of Mount Pleasant's Public Library, just a few blocks from our neighborhood.  There will be kids activities there, and I can't wait to see how Emilu takes it all in.  Have a wonderful weekend, and see you back on Monday.

Capital biking

I was never one to really love biking.  You might gasp, but the truth is that I was more into tomboy sports as a kid, especially those that required balls.  Touchball, baseball, kickball, throwball, you name it.  And when we didn't have a ball, we would make one up.  With duct tape, packing tape, newspaper and gift wrapping tape.
Photo via

I now I live in city where everyone bikes everywhere.  The Capital Bikeshare program is a hit, and one of the{stupid} reasons why they kicked out our last Mayor (this was costly mistake!)  But now, we are all thinking how did this city managed without bikes before?  The truth is that our biking program is one of the most successful in the country.  Mayor Fenty smartly allocated resources for infrastructure like permanent bike lanes and biking protocols for riders.

And to think that many opposed this program as costly, unnecessary, and yes, elitist.  I love bikes, and just wish I was brave enough to ride them.

9/11 Anniversary

As I was strolling around our neighborhood today with Emilu, I'm reminded of our national tragedy 11 years ago today.  It was a devastating loss for their families and loved ones.  I hope they find solace.  We will never forget.

Autumn around the neighborhood

Today the temperature was in the 60s. Can you believe this? It was so pleasant, with Autumn in full display, it was the perfect afternoon. So, just because, I decided to shoot some pictures with my camera phone. Autumn is a truly magnificent season in textures and colors. And let's not even get into the aromas and tastes. That is another post.
